I very highly recommend this book. I can't say enough about the way the author has presented this very useful information. If you are a pinholer as I am, you know there are always little tidbits of information that you are needing. This well written book helps guide you through the entire process of pinhole from constructing a camera to exposure and development of your film. I have several books on the subject but this one is so concise and well written you barely need another..Thank you Tom for putting together this wonderful little treasure.

The F295 Historic Process Workbook 4 Processes 6 Techniques 14 Lessons Tom Persinger 9780615675411 Books Reviews

This is a terrific guide to getting started in the world of historic process image creating. It provides some background, detailed information of the chemistry needed, as well as critical safety information. Highly recommended.
How do you learn a lot about photography really fast? Read "The F295 Workbook HISTORIC PROCESS." Highly recommended! Chapters 3 & 4 (Lenses and Apertures and The Camera) are worth the price of the book alone!
Everything old is new again. Darkroom enthusiasts will enjoy learning these historic processes. The book gives you the material lists and steps you need to make Cyanotypes and other vintage photograph prints. Since I still shoot alot of film myself, the book has given me the push to try some home developing. Belongs on everybodys darkroom shelf. Would love to have seen some sample pics of each process.
The f295 workbook is a great addition to any darkroom class. It is short, succinct, and has a "quiz" at the end of each chapter. A quick how to that would be a great start to get students into the magic and chemistry of the beginnings of photography.
This small handbook is lean and mean! It is this type of publication that provides the essentials needed to get going right away. From history, building a simple camera, choosing your process, to preparing your portfolio everything you need to get started with handmade photography is locating in this workbook. The size makes it perfect for the lab or the book bag. As an educator at the university level and for continuing education workshops for adults, I can say that this publication is an added benefit to any hands-on course for the processes included in the book. This historic process book is also valuable to the veteran returning to the darkroom after years of doing something else! With well organized information this workbook will shake the cobwebs from your brain, and you will be wondering why you ever left the darkroom to begin with.
This is probably the most concise, well-rounded, and easy-to-understand book on photography you can find, and furthermore builds the perfect foundation for becoming an AUTONOMOUS photographer without spending hundreds (thousands in the long run) on equipment, chemistry, and lab membership fees. If you know absolutely nothing about photography, a thorough reading (only 55 pages), aided by the brief quizzes in each chapter, will help you understand the workings of the medium. Even if you start with literally nothing, it will teach you to build lenses and cameras, properly expose negatives (or even MAKE them yourself!), and make prints through a variety of means, while simultaneously teaching you the history and workings of your equipment and the chemical processes of the medium. It bridges past with present by teaching historical as well as digital processes ...and even shows you how to present and package your work once you're well on your way. A fantastic resource for beginners and experts alike (in the truest sense, unlike many books out there!). You're really doing yourself a disservice if you don't pick one of these up!
The f295 Workbook is a great tool for photographers that want to expand their craft or learn more about the history of photography. With several processes to choose from, I definitely recommend this handy quick-reference guide. The workbook has something valuable for anyone gathering the equipment and knowledge necessary to make their own prints. I especially like Tom's writing, which is engaging and concise with clear and simple-to-follow instructions. At the end of each section there's even a nice bonus with links to more information and resources. As an experienced pinhole and lens photographer who's comfortable in the darkroom, I'm finding that there is plenty of intriguing material to study and work on. I can't wait to make my own historic process prints.
