When Alexandra Turner takes a job at the eerie Tudor mansion, Halton Cray, she needs all her wit and spirit to cope with the enigmatic Thom Rues. While a near constant fog envelopes the estate, Alex begins questioning the bizarre things she’s seeing around him as gossip circulates that Thom is more than just different. Determined not to let rumours influence her, Alex tries to learn who he really is, even as he provokes her with his dark sense of humour. But discovery of Thom’s terrible secret propels Alex’s life in a direction she could have never predicted.
Halton Cray is a contemporary paranormal romance and dark adventure inspired by Charlotte Brontё’s Jane Eyre. The first book in the Shadows of the World series.

Jane Eyre is my absolute favorite book, so I was excited when I heard about this contemporary story inspired by Jane Eyre, but with a paranormal twist. I. Loved. It.I thought Alex was such a great character. She was strong, sarcastic and enjoyed spending time in old haunted mansions. My kind of girl. I also loved Thom. He was kind of manic-y in his interactions with Alex, but in the best possible way. Does that even make sense? I couldn't wait to find out what his "madwoman in the attic" flaw would be, and it did not disappoint.
And I wish Halton Cray was a real place. I would be there in a heartbeat. Such a great story, and I'm so excited to read the second book when it comes out!

Halton Cray Shadows of the World Book 1 edition by NB Roberts Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
What a great book! I am grateful for authors like this who have such a talent for drawing the reader into the lives of characters, to the point you feel a part of the story. I appreciate the descriptive writing that brought every page to life, from landscapes to characters, allowing me to see the story unfolding in detail. I enjoyed the wit, humor and boldness of the main character Alex. The beginning of the book pulls the reader into the mysterious and dark surroundings of Halton Cray, a Tudor Mansion where Alex works. Each character adds a layer of intrigue (and humor) to the plot. The love story that evolves is absolutely thrilling and magnetic and the end will leave you wanting more! I think anyone who enjoys a book with mystery, suspense, and interesting plot twists will love this book!
Fantastic book..... For those of us die hard Jane Eyre fans(you know who you are) this book has enough parallels that you will not be disappointed if you are looking for a retelling, but it is also so thoroughly original and truly well written that it is on par with all of our favourite British Literature while remaining modern and having a voice of it's own. Well worth the read and definitely the price. In fact the price does not really do the book justice as I would have payed ten times it to read this book. Not for the faint of heart though, I will tell you that.
This was a very well-thought-out adaptation of a classic novel. Set in the present day, it tells the story of a girl who takes a job at an old ghostly mansion where she meets a rather strange, sarcastic man. They become mutually fascinated by each other and of course one thing leads to another. However, she is not Jane Eyre and he is not Edward Rochester and it's not the nineteenth century - so things are different - very different. There is a strong element of the para-normal - far beyond the usual spectres - there are strange noises and secret passages and lots of fog. Chances are - you'll enjoy it - I did.
One of the best books I've read in recent memory...so much so that I can hardly believe this is the authors first! The writing is brilliant, the pacing is perfect and both the mystery and the romance will keep you on tenterhooks. It's deliciously dark and oh so satisfying and I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out! This author is now on my auto-buy list. Highly, highly recommended.
I usually don't like paranormal romance but this book drew me in. Well written. Likeable characters that I could identify with. A mystery that draws you slowly in to the paranormal side without seeming too ridiculous.
I get tired of books where the main characters are portrayed as always being right and ending up all powerful. In this story each character has flaws and makes mistakes that all humans make. The author is able to show the good, the bad, the irritating and the redeeming qualities in all her characters within the book.
An engaging book. Not a "deep" book but I like that. The author writes a character driven book. I enjoy that style. Not overly wordy and not bogging down in pages of descriptions of places, how people look, or motives of all characters. The style of writing respects you have enough imagination to fill in the details for yourself.
Wow! This book was unbelievable! How to describe it - thriller? ghost story? otherworldy? It was ALL these things!
The plot was ingenious and I was continually surprised turn after turn. I love all the characters, even those you "love to hate". The moral of the story is a great one that needs to be reinforced more than it is.
Roberts has a distinctly British writing style that once adjusted to, was utterly fantastic.
I can't wait to delve into book two and get lost in Halton Cray again.
Took me longer than usual to get through due to the holidays but it's an interesting spin on supernatural intrigue/paranormal romance. More of a cozy take on those genres than anything in-your-face about it but since Jane Eyre is an inspiration I can't be too surprised.
Up front and fair warning - I didn't like Thom. He rubbed me wrong the entire novel because he seems like a guy who confuses bullying with teasing. Between that and much of the romance being fueled by smitten tendencies I wasn't really sucked into that facet of the story. My tastes, not necessarily everyone's.
I'd recommend this to anybody who wants a paranormal romance that reads like a ghost story. if that's of interest, it should be a nice read.
